Jamie Carragher believes Aston Villa manager Unai Emery would be 'the perfect coach to revive' Manchester United.

Manchester United are assessing candidates to become their next permanent manager, following the exit of Ruben Amorim in January.Michael Carrick is currently in interim charge until the end of the season and has guided the Red Devils into the Champions League places.

However, Carragher believes Emery boasts the perfect credentials to turn around the club's fortunes. Emery is a record four-time winner of the Europa League and led Paris Saint-Germain toLigue 1 title success in 2017-18.

In England, he recovered from an underwhelming spell at Arsenal to rebuild his reputation at Aston Villa. Since arriving in the Midlands in October 2022, has turned The Villans into regular contenders for Champions League football and this week became the fastest manager in Aston Villa’s history to reach 100 wins across all competitions

The Spaniard will be in the opposite dug-out this weekend when Aston Villa travel to Old Trafford, in a crucial clash for both sides' top-four ambitions.

Ahead of that fixture, Carragher questioned why the 54-year-old has not been mentioned as an option for Manchester United.

"For Emery not to be under serious consideration says plenty about modern football. By any metric, he would be the perfect coach to revive United. For me, only Pep Guardiola ranks higher of those currently managing in England," the ex-Liverpool defender toldThe Telegraph.

"Here is a manager who wins trophies, has a clear football vision, a track record of revitalising clubs in need of a mini-revolution to break into the Champions League, and who demands respect while leading with authority. Add the fact he is now proven in thePremier League, and such coaches are in short supply.

"Emery’s work at Valencia, Villarreal, Sevilla and Villa has cemented an unwanted reputation: that he has found his level just below the established superpowers. If you are a sleeping giant struggling in mid-table with aspirations of finishing fourth and winning the Europa League, he is the man to call.

"If, like United, you are dreaming big to win the Premier League and Champions League in the next five years, Emery’s record at Arsenal and Paris St-Germain is a red flag."
