Álvaro Carreras has confirmed that Antonio Rudiger slapped him in the dressing room, calling it an isolated matter that has been resolved. The episode comes amid a poor run late in Álvaro Arbeloa’s spell at Real Madrid.

The player said in a post that recent insinuations did not reflect reality and that his commitment to the club and to his coaches has been unwavering. He added that he has acted with professionalism, respect and dedication while working hard to return home.

Carreras has since lost standing after a clash with head coach Álvaro Arbeloa, who questioned his commitment, a view shared by some team-mates. Signed in the summer for 50 million from Benfica, he faded from prominence following Xabi Alonso’s dismissal. Arbeloa has alternated him with Fran García and Ferland Mendy.

Those defensive shortcomings may have contributed to his run-in with Rudiger, who has publicly criticised the full-back’s lapses more than once. Carreras now says the confrontation was minor and settled and that his relationship with the squad is very good.

The full-back has played in 38 matches, totalling 3221 minutes. He could start Sunday’s clásico against Barcelona, with Mendy sidelined by a right rectus femoris tendon injury.

Arbeloa must choose between Carreras and Fran García, who hopes to leave Madrid at season’s end in search of minutes. In January Bournemouth made an offer and the player even said goodbye to team-mates, but the club blocked the move.
