While the former Middlesbrough boss is yet to receive a formal offer, Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox are leaning towards appointing him.
The decision is expected to be finalised on Monday, with the club’s hierarchy aiming to give the new boss as much time as possible to prepare for Manchester City’s visit on Saturday.
Darren Fletcher was in charge when United lost 2-1 against Brighton & Hove Albion in the FA Cup on Sunday.

They will play only 40 games this season – their lowest in a single campaign in 111 years.
United are seventh in the Premier League standings, but could drop down to the bottom half by next month if they lose to City and Arsenal.
