Michael Carrick has said that Kobbie Mainoo is close to penning a new contract with Manchester United.
The 20-year-old has been a key first-team player this season, featuring in 22 Premier League games.
Mainoo’s deal runs until 2027, with the club having an option to extend it by another year. He currently earns around £25,000 per week at Old Trafford.
United are keen to tie him down to a new five-year contract, which would boost his salary to £120,000 a week.
Talking to the media before Monday’s home clash with Leeds United, Carrick confirmed that negotiations with Mainoo are going well.
“It’s getting closer, so we’re positive about that,” said Carrick. “We’re calm with it, but we’re positive with it, and time will tell how it goes. But at the moment, we are in a good place.”
Mainoo’s future was a subject of debate when United last played against Leeds in January.
The England international had not started a single Premier League game at that point under Ruben Amorim.
Amorim was sacked following the 1-1 draw at Elland Road, and Mainoo’s fortunes have transformed since then.
The midfielder has started 10 of the 11 league fixtures under Carrick, with two assists to his name.
He is now poised to sign a new deal that would keep him at United until 2031.
This is good news for the Red Devils’ supporters, as Mainoo is a top-quality midfielder who is highly rated for his technical ability, composure under pressure and ball-carrying skills.
