Lee Carsley wants to build on the confidence gained from England’s 2-0 win over the Republic of Ireland as he settles into life as interim manager.

Carsley’s reign began with a comfortable win in England’s Nations League opener on Saturday, as goals from Declan Rice and Jack Grealish sealed victory in Dublin.

The result ensured Carsley got off to a perfect start after replacing Gareth Southgate as head coach on an interim basis.

The 50-year-old has never managed permanently at senior level before and has admitted to having doubts after taking the reins from Southgate, despite his success with the u-21 side.

However, Carsley has said the win over the Republic of Ireland has helped remove doubts over his capabilities to do the role.

Carsley admits to England doubts

“In the back of your mind you always think… you know, it’s easy to be the England manager, isn’t it, when you’re sat in the house,” he said this week ahead of facing Finland on Tuesday evening.

“There have been times where I’ve thought I’m not sure if I could do it.

“But it [the Dublin win] has done my confidence good, and the rest of the staff as well, that actually we’re OK, we’ll be all right.

“I think it’s natural to have doubts.”
