Jess Carter says that resilience has been the key to England reaching a first-ever FIFA Women’s World Cup final.

The Lionesses will take on Spain in Sydney on Sunday morning for the right to become world champions for the first time.

England have had to overcome some big challenges throughout the tournament. The Lionesses have had to find ways to win when presented with difficult scenarios. Defender Carter says that it is resilience that makes this England team so special.

“This team has been incredible,” Carter said when speaking on the latest edition of Lionesses Down Under. “The mentality is something we’ve spoken about and everyone’s resilience to get through some tough games and moments where we didn’t actually have the best performance.

“It’s our resilience that has got us through. Every player and staff member are so special to this team and I feel really privileged to play with them all.”

Another attribute of this England team is their ability to keep focused in the moment. Sarina Wiegman’s side don’t allow themselves to get carried away with the highs or get down with the lows. Defender Carter went on to say that the team are fully-focused on their preparations for the Spain game and that they are not thinking about their achievements.

She said “We’re just in the moment so much and so focused. I’m focused on trying to reset and get ready again, so I’m not able to process what we’ve achieved already.

“When we step onto the pitch on Sunday, it’s going to be an incredible feeling and that’s when it will all sink in. For now, I’m just focused on recovering and getting ready to go again, so for me it’s not really sunk in yet.”

The FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023 final between Spain and England kicks-off at 11am on Sunday morning.
