Casemiro is set to leave Manchester United this summer.

United had the option to extend his deal by a further year, or even offer him a new contract altogether, yet it appears neither route will be taken.

While it is suggested that the Brazilian and the club mutually agreed to part ways, some feel the real reason behind his departure is INEOS’ desire to shed his hefty wages from the wage bill.

Ineos trimming the wage bill

One of INEOS’ primary missions has been to bring discipline to player wages at the club and establish a more sustainable, competitive wage structure. The plan has been clear: offload top earners, and we have already seen that with Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho. Now Casemiro is set to follow the pair out of the door.

That said, with his summer exit admission still sinking in, some still harbour hope he could yet stay.

After the win over Aston Villa, a game in which he grabbed his seventh league goal of the season, crowning yet another impressive shift, the Stretford End was heard singing: “One more year, one more year, Casemiro!”

It makes sense that fans want him to stay. The Samba star has arguably been the most consistent Red Devil despite the turbulence the 20-time English champions have endured.

Well, beyond the Old Trafford faithful, reports suggest Michael Carrick, who is gunning for the Old Trafford hot seat, also wants Casemiro to stay.

What the United players think about Casemiro’s potential exit

Interestingly, it is not just the fans and Carrick who are reluctant to see him go. The United dressing room, as per Matheus Cunha, already highlighted by The Peoples Person, and Leny Yoro, would also have loved the ex-Real Madrid star to stay.

“Everyone wanted him to stay, he’s a player [who is] really important for us,” Yoro told ESPN.

“Even in the dressing room, every day, he has the experience that no one else has in the team. He won everything, so this helped us a lot in the games and even outside the pitch.”

Meanwhile, while Bruno Fernandes is rightfully grabbing the headlines, Casemiro too has enjoyed a truly revolutionary season in United colours.

Casemiro staying would be wise

His steel in United’s engine room will be missed, but so too will his leadership and that warrior mentality in big games. Giving him one more year to mentor the younger players, particularly with United poised to return to Champions League football, could prove enormously valuable.

One more season from Casemiro could, in many ways, serve as the perfect transition for United’s midfield rebuild.
