Former Mamelodi Sundowns forward Cassius Mailula has opened up on the reason why he opted to sign for Belgian second division outfit KV Kortrijk on a season-long loan.

The 24-year-old, deemed surplus to requirements by MLS side Toronto FC, is embarking on his second successive loan spell after a brief stint with Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club last season.

During his time in Casablanca, Mailula chipped in with six goals and seven assists in 36 matches across all competitions. He also scored for the Red Castle in the FIFA Club World Cup.

Now, the Downs academy product is determined get his career back on track in Belgium as he has set sights on other loftier ambitions, including a return to the Bafana Bafana fold.

“The reason I chose KV Kortrijk is mainly because it's in Europe and that's also my dream. I want to play for a big club in Europe and I think this is a big stepping stone for me to take my career further to a higher level,” Mailula told Kortrijk TV.

"The team will also give me a chance to get back to Bafana Bafana, the South African national team.

On his objectives for the season, Mailula is aiming to be a constant threat in front of goals, with a sole mission of helping Kortrijk gain promotion to the topflight.

“My ambition is to get back to the First Division with the club, and also to have as many goals throughout the season, and also have many assists - that's my goal,” he added.

"I didn't just come here for a holiday, I came here to work hard, to represent my family and also my country.

Mailula rose to prominence in his homeland under the tutelage of coach Rulani Mokwena during the 2022/23 campaign, where he netted 15 goals and provided four assists to earn a move to America.
