Hundreds of Argentinians living in Castelló gathered on Wednesday 15 June to watch Argentina’s 2026 World Cup semi-final against England, hoping to see the team reach a final against Spain.

According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the build-up began in mid-afternoon with a banderazo, a supporters’ tradition before big matches. The gathering started at 18:30 in Plaza del Ayuntamiento de Castelló, flooding the city centre with sky blue and white and with Argentine songs.

Families, young people and national-team supporters joined in, many voicing the dream of a fourth star on the shirt, a chant that echoed around Plaza Mayor de Castelló.

After a breathless contest, Argentina beat England 2-1 to book a place in the final.

Euphoria then swept through Castelló’s streets late into the night, as a tide of fans returned there to celebrate the victory.
