Castellón and Sabadell meet on Sunday at 19.00 at SkyFi Castalia in the Segunda División. El Periódico Mediterráneo highlights a rivalry rich in goals, promotions and controversy. It stretches back 87 years, and this will be the 70th official chapter.

Castellón began with a 1-0 win at Real Sociedad B. Newly promoted Sabadell opened with a 0-0 at El Molinón against Sporting.

Across 69 competitive meetings Castellón lead with 35 wins, nine draws and 25 defeats, scoring 122 to Sabadell’s 83. The fixture spans 30 in Segunda División, 26 in Segunda B, six in Primera, four in Primera Federación and three in the Copa, with a record 8-0 in 1944.

In September 2015, in the Copa del Rey, Tercera side Castellón held Sabadell 1-1 after extra time at the Nova Creu Alta, then advanced 4-2 on penalties with nine men as Álvaro Campos saved two.

After seven years without meetings, intensity returned in 2018. They fought survival in 2018-19, then in pandemic-hit 2019-20 both went up after the season stopped with Castellón a point clear, and both later went down in 2021. Sabadell have returned after consecutive promotions, capped by play-off comebacks against Real Madrid Castilla and Zamora.

Castalia has been especially fraught. Between December 2018 and December 2021 Sabadell won three of four visits, all 1-0, the exception a 2-1 to Castellón. The pattern flipped in September 2022 with a 3-1 home win, then two more league meetings also finished 3-1, the latest in April 2023.
