Castellón’s historic Campos Federativos are set to stage football again after years of abandonment. The site, unused since 2011, will be brought back into service for the city’s clubs.

According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, mayor Begoña Carrasco met FFCV president Salvador Gomar to set out next steps, joined by sports councillor Maica Hurtado and vice president Jordi Lucena. The first phase covers clearing and making safe the grounds between Avenida del Mar and Avenida Hermanos Bou, including the perimeter and access points.

Carrasco said the clearance would begin imminently, enabling the recovery of a venue that has gone 15 years without sport. She added that two artificial pitches are scheduled to be available to clubs in 2027, with a focus on grassroots football.

The timeline revises earlier ambitions to finish in 2026. The administrative framework is due to be closed this year, with the opening pushed back accordingly.

City hall and the FFCV are finalising a collaboration agreement to be drafted before the end of 2026, defining responsibilities across the complex. Plans also include refurbished dressing rooms, federation offices, medical services and improved access, adding to the city’s 18 municipal pitches.

The council estimates more than 5,000 academy players in the capital, which has stretched existing facilities. Resolving land ownership, previously held by the Real Federación Española de Fútbol, has helped unlock the project and return a site known to generations of locals.
