Castellón’s last Primera División match was on 9 June 1991, a landmark nearing 35 years for orelluts who have never seen their team in the top flight.

According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the club had returned in 1989/1990, staying up 14th with a four-point cushion when wins were still worth two. Their 1990/1991 tilt quickly turned attritional rather than consolidatory.

They opened with a narrow defeat at the Bernabéu, then drew 1-1 with Español at Castalia. A 3-1 over Betis and a 5-1 against Tenerife followed, Pedro Alcañiz scoring four in little over half an hour.

Comfort never followed. After a 1-0 against Osasuna on matchday eight, they went 11 more without a win, including six 0-0, five in succession, plus a 6-0 at Camp Nou, part of 757 minutes without a goal.

They then beat Oviedo, Valladolid, Athletic Club and Sporting de Gijón at home before six straight defeats. Castellón never won away all season, and a 2-0 against Cádiz before the final three rounds briefly revived belief.

Instability reached the bench, Luiche led most of the year, Pepe Heredia took one game, then Lucien Müller arrived for the run-in. Alcañiz was the main outlet, yet the side ended with only 27 league goals.

On the final day only one permutation relegated them, and it happened. A 3-0 defeat at Carlos Tartiere and Cádiz’s 2-1 comeback over Zaragoza at Ramón de Carranza, with Kiko Narváez influential, left Castellón 19th on 28 points, eight wins, 12 draws and 18 defeats.
