The CBF brought together representatives of Série A and Série B clubs and state federations in Rio de Janeiro on Monday to begin discussions on forming a Brazilian football league. According to Diario Do Peixe, the meeting launched a dialogue on structural changes to national competitions.
The federation presented studies on the domestic game, pointing to room for growth even with the Brasileirão already among the world’s most valuable leagues. It also shared observations from European competitions, with emphasis on governance, financial fair play, refereeing and technology.
CBF president Samir Xaud called it a historic step. He said Séries A and B met with the federation for the first time to discuss a single league, which demands responsibility, vision and, above all, unity, with the aim of elevating Brazilian football’s value.
The analysis highlighted areas needing progress, including calendar, playing time, stadiums, security, broadcasting, communications, marketing, the early departure of young talents, governance and club finances. The CBF said any league must be led by the clubs, with the body acting as mediator, a point vice president Gustavo Dias linked to the need for maturity, dialogue and compromise.
Recent changes, such as calendar adjustments, the introduction of financial fair play and investment in refereeing, were presented as key building blocks for a league project. Xaud added that these reforms are foundations rather than add-ons, and that prioritising them was intended to underpin the league’s sustainability.
