CBF released the VAR audio after Flamengo’s 1-1 draw at Corinthians in the Brasileirão’s eighth round, revealing a clear split over the dismissal of Evertton Araújo. On-field referee Rodrigo José Pereira de Lima upheld a red card despite a recommendation for yellow.
Seven minutes into the second half, Araújo contested the ball with Breno Bidon and trod on the Corinthians midfielder’s heel. VAR official Wagner Reway assessed the contact as slight, describing it as lateral foot-to-foot, and advised a caution rather than a sending-off.
Reway reiterated that Araújo was playing the ball and used medium force, and the VAR team aligned behind a yellow card. He urged a review of the on-field decision.
After checking multiple angles at the monitor, Pereira de Lima maintained the red, arguing the Flamengo midfielder caught Bidon above and below. The decision stood despite the VAR guidance.
Flamengo played the remainder with one fewer and held on for a point away from home. Post-match, director José Boto, head coach Leonardo Jardim and centre-back Danilo delivered strong criticism of the officiating.
Araújo will serve an automatic suspension. Flamengo return on 2 April after the FIFA international break, visiting Red Bull Bragantino at 21h30 Brasília time in Bragança Paulista for round nine.
