Cedric Kaze talks Kaizer Chiefs' future after Carling Knockout Cup exit
Amidst a turbulent period for Kaizer Chiefs, the interim coaching duo of Cedric Kaze and Khali Ben Youssef find their positions under intense scrutiny. This follows the team's abrupt exit from the Carling Knockout Cup, succumbing to Stellenbosch FC in a tense 5-4 penalty shootout after a match that failed to produce a goal in open play.
Their ascension to leadership was sudden, occurring after the club's management requested head coach Nasreddine Nabi to step aside. Nabi's departure marks the end of a brief but notable tenure; having arrived in July 2024, he navigated a challenging league campaign that saw a ninth-place finish. Despite this, he secured a monumental victory, ending the club's ten-year trophy drought by clinching the Nedbank Cup in May after a triumphant match against rivals Orlando Pirates.
In contrast, the current interim spell has been defined by a lack of positive results, with the recent cup defeat amplifying serious concerns among the club's supporters about the direction of the team. When questioned directly about his and Ben Youssef's future, Kaze, who originally joined as Nabi's assistant, placed the decision firmly in the hands of the club's hierarchy. "I believe that question should be directed to the management," he stated, adding, "As of right now, we are the coaches of Kaizer Chiefs. Should anything else be decided by the management, I’m pretty sure they will let everyone know."
