Borja Iglesias delivered one of his finest performances in a Celta Vigo shirt as he led the line with authority in his team’s 2-0 triumph over Real Madrid

His movement, strength, and timing caused constant problems for the Madrid back line, but just as importantly, his leadership helped drive Celta to one of their most memorable victories in recent years.

After the match, the striker reflected on both the historic result and the tension that unfolded during the closing stages.

Speaking about Celta’s overall display, Iglesias emphasised how well the team executed their plan.

He expressed pride in the collective performance and how efficiently the squad capitalised on their opportunities.

“Tremendous, really. We read the game very well and we were also lucky with the chances we had. We played very well.”

Playing with an advantage

Celta played a significant portion of the match with a numerical advantage after Real Madrid’s red cards, but Iglesias insisted that this did not make the task any easier.

The striker explained that Madrid’s physicality and talent still made the encounter extremely demanding.

“With the team they have, how physical they are and their quality, even if they have one less player, it’s difficult to match them. We also read this very well.

“We were able to have possession time, play in the opponent’s half and defend well in a low block. I think we played a great game.”

As the match approached full-time, the atmosphere shifted dramatically. Real Madrid protested multiple decisions, interruptions became frequent, and the tension visibly grew.

Iglesias admitted he did not expect such a heated finale. He noted that frustration clearly took hold of the home side.

“It got more tense than I thought it would. In the end, there were a lot of stoppages, some fouls that left us all wondering, and they got a little more desperate than they should have.”

Lastly, Iglesias also reflected on the team’s unexpected ability to collect key points on the road.

“Last year we weren’t able to win away, and this year we’re able to win here. Sometimes there are things in soccer that you can’t explain,” he concluded.
