Callum McGregor has felt his fair share of criticism in his time at the club, more so these past few months, but one thing you can’t criticise the skipper for is his desire and determination, which he proved once again in last nights vital last gasp win over St Mirren.

Too many folk are always ready to jump in and criticise the players, James Forrest has been getting it on and off for years and in the current team Liam Scales and Arne Engels regularly are targeted by the trolls. Adam Idah left Celtic after scoring 20 goals last season and winning the Scottish Cup Final for us In May 2024 noting that there’s a lot of hate around at Celtic.

Callum McGregor showed the way and the celebrations last night at Paisley and in bars and living rooms around the world were joyous. It’s moments like that where league titles can be won.

Not only did the Celtic captain earn us all three points, he led from example during the turgid ninety plus minutes we had to endure on the night, proving once more how valuable he is to the side.

Callum has stepped up since the departure of Brendan Rodgers, and has been instrumental under the interim leadership of Martin O’Neill. Even at the end he was trying to bring some unity to the club presumably asking the support to focus on supporting the team on match days.

The players would have in no doubt been experiencing some turmoil over the departure of Brendan, amidst all the uncertainty of who is replacing him, not to mention the off field controversies that currently plague the club, but Callum has proved his credentials by steadying the ship and navigating the players through some uncertain times.

He stepped up against theRangers at Hampden, scoring the goal that proved ever so vital in the club reaching the Premier Sports Cup final. And of course last night scored a goal of the season contender with the last kick of the ball, a moment that could prove ever so vital in the title race.

Callum McGregor stands up when it matters. A true leader on and off the pitch. Here’s what Martin O’Neill had to say about the Celtic captain in Paisley last night after Celtic’s vital victory against St Mirren…

“Well, it was massive, absolutely massive. It was a great goal from a great player. The game is obviously heading for a draw, and I’m not so sure that we deserved any more than that. He scores a fabulous goal. Strangely enough, I just said there in a little interview, I thought he moved it out of his feet just at the edge of the box and thought he could hit this.

“So it was a great goal. Maybe it didn’t belong with the game, but it was just great to win,” Martin O’Neill said.

Everything the interim manager had to say can be read HERE and there’s a video from Martin’s post match media conference too.
