Florian Plettenberg is currently reporting that Celtic are pushing to acquire Freiburg striker Junior Adamu on loan. Two other unnamed clubs are also reported to be interested in the nine-times-capped Austrian international. Plettenberg nevertheless claims that Celtic’s interest is “very concrete“.
Barely used at all by previous SCF head coach Christian Streich during the 2023/24 campaign, Adamu found new life in his first few matches under Julian Schuster at the beginning of last season. Adamu scored a brace in Freiburg’s opening round 2024/25 Pokal fixture and added another brace in a matchday three win over Bochum at the beginning of the season.
Unfortunately, Adamu didn’t score any other goals over the course of the entire season. This year, amid one Bundesliga and one Europa League tally, Adamu has drifted out of Schuster’s plans entirely. Adamu spent the last four league fixtures unused on the bench. Freiburg prefer options such as veteran Lucas Höler or the newly emergent Igor Matanovic over Adamu.
The 24-year-old still maintains an estimated €5m market value and Adamu has been capped three times for country this year. Adamu was once one of the Austrian Bundesliga’s top strikers whilst playing for RB Salzburg.
