Celtic Killers? Rangers Fans Debate Over Calibre Of Ibrox Transfer Targets

There’s been a little bit of debate in Ibrox Noise Towers about the caliber of player that Rangers are currently targeting. A recent article showed that we are targeting at least four, maybe five current players to arrive within potentially the next few weeks. We don’t know how many of these deals will get completed, but you never know, we might get one or two of them.
However, there has been, as we say, a bit of a division over the origins of these players and whether Rangers can do better, whether this is the level we are at, whether we should be grateful for the players that we’re targeting, or what.
Ibrox Noise’s contention is that, unfortunately, a few of these players do remind us of the Mark Warburton era, where we would go to the lower leagues of English football and dig up hidden gems. Now, we can’t accuse Conor Coady of being this. He is an experienced Premier League player. And in all fairness, the same would apply to Max Arons as well, who has around 100 Premier League appearances.
That’s not bad, but it does unfortunately appear in his case that his career slightly derailed with injury and he got farmed out on loan to Spain. However, in general, the caliber is still similar to what we had before. League 1 Championship. While we are not necessarily targeting downright bad players, and it has been argued successfully by a few that the likes of Joe Aribo and, on the other side of the city, O’Riley came from these lower leagues, these are, unfortunately, the exception.
That is a fair point to note, that these players are the exception to the rule. That they are talented and fine players who clearly got profit for both Rangers and them lot, but these aren’t a regular occurrence.
And if it was as easy as that, Warburton, with all his lower league experiments and hidden gems like Shayi Ojo, remember him, would have led us to be Celtic killers. But unfortunately, getting a player who is that outstanding from the lower leagues is an extremely, extremely slim odd.
We also know the budget this summer is not spectacular. We heard of the £20 million invested by the new owners, but that Russell Martin is only getting a significant chunk of it rather than the full amount. So, we are unlikely to see many multi-million pound players arrive.
But, of course, as many would argue, it is still only early in the window. It only opened on Monday, and there is plenty of time left before the end of the window. There is, however, a lot less time before the Champions League qualifiers begin. And we already know that at least one of those teams, Brann, should we draw them or end up with them, are at midway through their season. And they will be a tough challenge, to say the least, being match ready as they are. So, we need to be match ready and up to speed when it comes to our signings and getting them in in good time for pre-season
This is a mistake we have made many years running in the past, not getting enough talent in by the time pre-season starts. As the moment kicks in, we have just that one arrival, Cameron from Dundee. That at least is somebody. And we, of course, know about the six departures as well. All the loans and the three announced ones at the start of the window. In Balogun, Lawrence and Hagi. We will just have to see how things go. Obviously, we will continue to monitor the situation, and hopefully we do get a Celtic Killing team.
Our hopes for this are not super high, but time will tell.
