Celtic are closely monitoring Dundee United’s £1million-plus valued goal machine Lawrence Shankland, Football Insider understands.

The Scottish giants are among the clubs with a strong interest in the centre-forward, who has been catapulted into the national spotlight with his remarkable scoring feats this season.

A Celtic has told Football Insider the club have lined up regular transfer missions to assess a player they believe is capable of making the grade in the Scottish Premiership.

This comes after Football Insider revealed at the end of last month that Rangers were hot on the trail of Shankland.

Dundee United sporting director Tony Asghar has insisted that the 24-year-old is not for sale in January and the club will reject all bids for their prolific scorer.

But Celtic have the financial power to make the second-tier club an offer they can’t refuse for the centre-forward, who marked his second Scotland appearance with a goal in the 6-0 thrashing of San Marino on Sunday.

He was called up to the national team after his remarkable record for Dundee United in the Championship this season.

Shankland has scored 15 club goals this season, including an extraordinary 14 from just eight league matches.

Dundee United signed Shankland on a free transfer from Ayr United in the summer and believe his prolific scoring and international status now comfortably makes him a seven-figure asset.

He has now figured twice for Scotland even though he has only played 17 matches in the country’s top tier.
