Celtic miss out on Niko Sigur after Champions League exit dealt transfer blow | OneFootball

Celtic look set to miss out on long-term midfield target Niko Sigur, with the Hajduk Split star reportedly on his way to Toulouse.

The Hoops had tracked Sigur across two transfer windows and were again linked with a move for the 22-year-old this summer.

However, Celtic’s calamitous Champions League exit to LASK last week was reportedly a significant blow to their hopes of landing the Canada international, with the deal subsequently described as ‘dead’.

Hajduk were believed to value Sigur at around €4million, attracting interest from several clubs across Europe.

According to French regional outlet Les Violets, Toulouse have now won the race for his signature, with a deal finalised for the midfielder to move to Ligue 1.

Sigur was left out of Hajduk’s squad for Monday’s 2-0 victory over Lokomotiva, with manager Gonzalo Garcia confirming his absence was related to an advanced transfer.

The move will see Sigur link up with former Motherwell manager Jens Berthel Askou, who was heavily linked with the Celtic job before leaving Fir Park to take charge of Toulouse earlier this summer.

Celtic have since moved on to other midfield targets, agreeing deals to bring Joel van den Berg and Oliver Sorensen to Parkhead.

Attention also remains on the left-back position, particularly with Kieran Tierney currently sidelined and Martin O’Neill short of natural cover.

A deal for Chelsea youngster Landon Emenalo was agreed weeks ago and the defender underwent a medical, but the proposed move has yet to be rubberstamped, seemingly due to an injury issue.

Sigur, meanwhile, was born in Canada but represented Croatia. He switched his international allegiance to Canada in 2024 and has since established himself in Jesse Marsch’s side.

Sigur further enhanced his reputation at this summer’s World Cup, with Marsch hailing him as Canada’s best player following their knockout defeat to Morocco.
