Celtic open talks for Balazs Toth as Blackburn star rejects new contract

Celtic have reportedly identified Blackburn Rovers goalkeeper Balazs Toth as a potential summer signing as Martin O’Neill looks to strengthen his options between the posts.

The Hoops are in the market for competition for Viljami Sinisalo and are now said to be interested in the 28-year-old Hungary international.

According to Alan Nixon, Toth has rejected the offer of a new contract at Ewood Park and is entering the final year of his current deal.

That has left Blackburn open to cashing in rather than risk losing the goalkeeper for nothing next summer.

Rovers are reportedly looking for between £3million and £4m, although Celtic’s current valuation falls short of that figure.

Talks have taken place and the Scottish champions could return with an improved, bonus-heavy proposal before the transfer window closes.

Toth, who stands at 6ft 2in and has six caps for Hungary, impressed during his first season at Blackburn and was named the club’s Players’ Player of the Year.

Former Celtic boss Tony Mowbray, now back in charge at Ewood Park, has admitted the goalkeeper is unlikely to extend his stay but insists he will continue to feature while his future remains unresolved.

Mowbray said: “What I do know is he’s a wonderful human being, he’s a great guy, I connect on a human level with my players and my goalkeepers.

“He’s a happy, smiley kid, but I don’t know… I am fully aware that he’s not signing a new contract. He’s been made offers; he’s made a decision that he’s not going to, and where does that leave us?

“We have two talented goalkeepers out of contract and potentially having a value to the club that they might cash in on, or they might not cash in on, and we have to wait and see what the team’s decision is.”
