If a recent report from The Daily Record is believed to be true, Celtic are eyeing a cut-price deal for Jonas Wind, who is currently sidelined due to a hamstring injury. The Wolfsburg ‘number 9’ is expected to return to action by the end of this month, but the French heavyweights Lyon could rival the Hoops, given the centre-forward’s availability on a Bosman in the summer window.

The 26-year-old Denmark international progressed through the academy ranks of Avedøre, Rosenhøj Boldklub and FC Copenhagen before breaking into the latter’s first-team squad. He depicted his expertise high up the pitch while featuring for the Danish giants, and eventually earned a €12m transfer to the Bundesliga four years back.

Why Wind Should Seek A Fresh Challenge

Celtic were also in the mix for the striking ace, but lost the race to Wolfsburg. Despite netting 34 times and laying on 13 more in 120 appearances for the White and Greens, Wind has slipped down the pecking order behind Dzenan Pejcinovic and Adam Daghim, and therefore, would be allowed to leave on a minuscule fee over a free exit six months later.

The hitman is having an underwhelming run with just three starts in eight outings before his injury. Neither did he find the net nor register an assist in those fixtures, as the German outfit lost six of them. A fresh challenge elsewhere would benefit all parties involved, particularly the player himself, who must revive his form to stake a claim in Brian Riemer’s plans for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, helping the Danish Dynamites secure a berth via the playoffs.

Why Celtic Must Make It Happen

Celtic, on the other hand, are aggressively exploring the market for a new centre-forward. Kelechi Iheanacho’s return must be a boost for Martin O’Neill, but the Nigerian’s past injury record might haunt them in the decisive phase. Callum Osmand is also ruled out for months, thus leaving the veteran Irishman with Daizen Maeda and Johnny Kenny as the only regular options up top.

The Bhoys have been linked with various names, including Callum Wilson, Franko Kovačević, David Datro Fofana, Joel Piroe and their former talisman Kyogo Furuhashi. However, the Japanese star has decided to stay at Birmingham City, and the Hungarian hotshots Ferencvaros have defeated the Glasgow giants in the hunt for Kovačević. The Daily Record has dismissed the rumours circling Piroe, and the interest from Saudi Arabia could see Wilson rejecting a transfer north of the border.

While it is difficult to snap up the top names in winter, Wind would be a value-for-money recruit, with the ability to spearhead the Celtic attack, banking on his physicality, aerial presence and the sense of positioning in and around the opponents’ box.
