Dane Murray yesterday signed a contract extension with the club that keeps him at Celtic Park until 2028, and I think we can all agree that he’s fully deserving of his new deal. Then he celebrated in the best way possible by starting for Celtic and also scoring his first goal for the club in last nights 4-1 victory over Falkirk in the Premier Sports League Cup tie at Celtic Park.

Dane Murray announced himself to the Celtic supporters during Ange Postecoglou’s first few weeks in charge, playing in the early rounds of Europe before it all went a little flat for the youngster as far as the Celtic first team was concerned, mostly due to some terrible luck with injuries.

Dane had just turned 18, but made an immediate impression on our Australian gaffer.  Ange was certainly low on numbers after a disastrous campaign the year before and the incoming Celtic manager had a rebuild on his hands. That opened the door for Dane to play Ange’s pre season squad and he did himself justice.

Unfortunately for Dane, Ange recruited the likes of Cameron Carter Vickers and Carl Starfelt and Dane fell far out of the picture with a long term knee issue and he was not to be heard of again in terms of the Celtic first team until back in January when Brendan Rodgers brought him back into the fold, even giving him a taste of champions league action at Villa Park.

In between that period was a bleak one for Dane as he suffered his fair share of injury problems whilst having a successful loan spell at Queen’s Park. But credit to the youngster as he’s fought hard and showed great dedication to come back into the fold, being a stand out in pre season, and getting his just reward.

Brendan Rodgers had this to say about Dane Murray after the match last night, firstly relating to Dane Murray’s goal.

“Great header. I thought Arne’s deliveries all night were brilliant. He had maybe just one early on, or sorry, at the end of the half. But other than that, the precision, and credit to Gavin and Greg and the guys working on the set pieces, that’s exactly what they had planned. Get the delivery right, in the middle of the box, and Dane was there to score it. So it was very good. And great for him because he’s a great boy. He’s got a lot of potential, and I think over the next 12 to 18 months he’s going to really grow.”

And then his belief in Dane Murray as a player.  “Yeah, I think his ceiling’s so high. There’s areas of the game that he needs to clearly, obviously work on. But he’s 6’4, he’s quick, he can take the ball. He has a comfort with the ball which aligns with top players and he just, again, concentration is something that’s key for defenders,” Brendan said.

“But I really like him and that’s hence the reason we’ve tied him down. And I think he’s got a great future.”

Dane’s a fine example of where hard work and dedication can get you. He’s more than worthy of his new deal.
