RANGERS…1(Naderi 33)

Celtic suffered a 1-0 defeat at home to Rangers for their first Premiership loss of the season and bringing a tough week to a disappointing end.

Martin O’Neill’s side started on the front foot, with Camilo Duran causing the Rangers defence problems, and Emmanuel Fernandez was booked after just four minutes for a foul on the Colombian.

And that would be a talking point when the Rangers defender should have been penalised for a foul on Benjamin Nygren which would have earned a second yellow card, but the referee waved play on.

Celtic had the ball in the net when Auston Trusty finished superbly with his right foot after the ball was knocked into his path by Liam Scales, but the Irishman was flagged for offside and the goal was disallowed.

Rangers had a couple of tame efforts which Viljami Sinisalo dealt with comfortably before the Hoops came close again on the half-hour mark when Luke McCowan rolled the ball into Kieran Tierney’s path, but his powerful left-foot effort hit the top of the bar and went over.

Three minutes later, the visitors took the lead. A corner into the Celtic box was cleared out to Kim Minsu, and though his shot from the edge of the area was well-saved by Sinisalo, Ryan Nadei followed up to fire the ball into the net.

And three minutes later, the visitors almost doubled their lead when Djeidi Gassama clipped the ball over Sinisalo, but his effort came back off the post and Cameron Carter-Vickers blocked the follow-up shot from Kevin Kelsy.

The second-half almost began in perfect fashion for Celtic when Colby Donovan got on the end of a Mika Baur cross, but his goal-bound header was saved by Ivor Pandur in the Rangers goal.

The visitors looked dangerous on the break, and Sinisalo saved a James Penrice effort, which was thankfully scrambled clear.

And that was followed by a short from Minsu in the 54th minute which went just went of Sinisalo’s left-hand post.

Rangers had the ball in the net in the 74th minute when Olwethu Makhanya fired home but the ball clearly hit his arm before he shot, and a VAR review disallowed the goal.

Substitute Haissem Hassan delivered a few dangerous crosses into the box from the right wing, which didn’t find a Celtic head, and it proved to be a frustrating afternoon for Martin O’Neill’s side as they weren’t able to find an equaliser.
