We remember Tommy Burns, who passed 17 years ago today

17 years ago today we all  lost a legendary figure in Tommy Burns at the age of just 51. The life long Celtic supporter lived the dream by making over 500 appearances for the club winning numerous honours whilst also managing the club in a memorable three year spell which saw him bring an end to Celtic’s trophy drought in the mid-nineties as he led us to Scottish Cup glory in 1995.

Tommy also played and managed Kilmarnock, and had spells in England coaching at Newcastle and managing at Reading, whilst also having a stint as assistant manager of the national side, but his heart always lay with Celtic and it was fitting his last years were spent with the club he loved in a coaching capacity, latterly working alongside his friend Gordon Strachan.

Tommy Burns was the perfect definition of Mr Celtic

Tommy Burns was the perfect definition of Mr Celtic, supporter as a boy, playing for the side, managing the club, he was deeply religious man, a brilliant family man a genuinely decent human being. He was a real man of the people who had time for everyone, no matter their status in life or indeed what club they supported.

There’s a saying that only the good die young, and that would certainly be true of Tommy Burns. The Celtic legend is gone but certainly never forgotten, as the Celtic supporters up at Pittodrie last night for the game against Aberdeen showed, plus all the tributes being paid today to the one and only Tommy Twists, Tommy Turns, Tommy Burns. God bless him.
