The curtain rose on Celtic The Musical at Glasgow’s Pavilion Theatre last night as supporters and former players came together to celebrate the story of the club through song and stage.

From the moment the doors opened there was a buzz around the theatre, with fans young and old arriving in their colours to be part of the latest chapter of a production that has become a favourite with the Celtic family.

Inside, the audience were taken on a journey through the club’s proud history, from Brother Walfrid’s founding vision to Lisbon in 1967 and right up to the present day.

The terrace songs, the memories and the humour that connect generations of supporters filled the theatre and created an atmosphere that was every bit as special as a matchday in Paradise.

Actor Stephen McCole, who made his debut in the role of Paddy Quinn, reflected on his first performance in the show:

“It was bonkers. Brilliant. The crowd were amazing, and vocal, which we expected. They just loved it. I was absolutely stunned.

"It was a lot of hard work to get here and not a lot of time to bring it to fruition, so I’m really proud of everybody and what we managed. We’re having a great time, and that’s us just starting, so it’s only going to get better. Get your tickets now!”

Also making her first appearance was Elysia Welch, taking on the role of Rosie Quinn in the family at the heart of the production. Speaking after the show, she said:

“It was insane. The energy, the laughs, all the jokes from the rehearsal room where we’d tried out so many things.

"Then in front of the audience, it sings, it comes alive. We invite you in and we all have a brilliant night together.”

Among the audience were former Celts there to enjoy opening night. Willie McStay shared his thoughts on seeing the story of Celtic and his family brought to life on stage:

“It’s been outstanding tonight," he said. "For any Celtic supporter who wants to feel good about the club, this was it. Absolutely brilliant.”

And ex-Celtic defender Andreas Hinkel, who was back in Glasgow, spoke about his experience of the show:

“I enjoyed it, really. I have to say, I know the history, but it was really good. I came with my family and showed my little ones the history of the club.”

With standing ovations and plenty of voices in full song, the opening night set the tone for what promises to be a memorable run.

Celtic The Musical continues at Glasgow’s Pavilion Theatre until Saturday, September 27. Tickets are available now via Trafalgar Tickets.
