UEFA.com today confirmed that rookie Croatian referee Patrik Kolarić has been appointed to handle the Celtic v Ferencváros Europa League opener. This will be Patrik Kolarić’s first ever Europa League match so let’s hope he’s up to the challenge.
Martin O’Neill’s side will be looking to put their Champions League playoff disappointment against LASK behind them by putting together a strong campaign in European football’s second tier event this season.
The 31 year old referee will be joined by fellow Croatians Luka Pajić and Ivan Starčević as assistant referees. Dario Bel – again from Croatia – has been named as the fourth official for the match under the lights at a packed Celtic Park.
VAR duties will be headed by Croatian Mario Zebec with Belgian official Jan Boterberg acting as assistant VAR for the game.

Moving onto Sunday and the Scottish FA has confirmed that it will be John Beaton with the whistle and he will be assisted by David McGeachie and Jonathan Bell.

Nick Walsh was the referee on Sunday in the Premier Sports Cup quarter final at Ibrox and a week later he is involved again this time as VAR where he will be assisted by fellow referee Grant Irvine.

John Beaton handled the Falkirk v Hearts match last night and was verbally abused throughout by the travelling Hearts fans for awarding Celtic a penalty in the closing stages of the match against Motherwell at Fir Park back in May. Falkirk won the match 2-1.
Perhaps those Hearts fans have forgotten that their team only needed a point at Celtic Park in the final match of the season but ended up losing 3-1? That’s why we are Champions.
