Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has questioned Celtic’s substantial cash reserves as criticism of the club’s board continues following Sunday’s 3-0 defeat to Rangers.

Maguire was reacting to figures published by ValuBall comparing the cash held by Premiership clubs at the end of the 2024/25 financial year.

Celtic were comfortably top of the table with £77.31million in cash, marginally increasing from £77.23m the previous year. Rangers, meanwhile, held £30.50m.

The figures have emerged at a difficult time for the Celtic board, with supporters already questioning the club’s recruitment and use of its financial advantage following the heavy 3-0 derby defeat at Ibrox.

Reacting on X, Maguire wrote: “Celtic fans critical of the board and can understand why. Being top of the money in the bank account table wins nothing on the pitch.”

Celtic did spend significantly during that financial year, with £42.6m committed to player recruitment and agent fees while first-team labour costs reached record levels.

However, Maguire’s comments are likely to fuel the wider debate over whether Celtic are making the most of their considerable financial strength.
