Wolves boss Cesar Peixoto has revealed that he will not name an official club captain for this season, as he instead relies on a leadership group.

Wanderers finished their pre-season with an impressive 3-0 win over Racing Santander at Molineux on Saturday, in a game where Toti Gomes was captain for the first-half, with Kieran Trippier taking the armband after the break, even though the centre-back remained on the pitch.

Naturally, that was a talking point among the supporters, as many had expected Trippier to be named as the skipper following his high-profile arrival in the summer.

However, speaking to the Express & Star, Peixoto explained why he will be naming a specific individual as captain, as he instead opts to go with a group of players, with Raul Jimenez and Andre also namechecked as players who could wear the armband.

“Not only one, I have three now, but maybe it can be one or two more. I want four or five captains and after that I choose who will wear the armband in the games.

“I put Toti in the first half, Kieran in the second half. Andre and Raul are also captains. You're going to see what we're doing, but the important thing is the team, the group spirit is fantastic.”

The captaincy has been an issue at Wolves over the years since Conor Coady and Rúben Neves left the club.

Mario Lemina was stripped of the captaincy following an on-field disagreement at West Ham, whilst Nélson Semedo and Max Kilman left the club as captains.

Cesar Peixoto must keep the senior players happy at Wolves

This is an unusual setup, and whilst every manager will reinforce the importance of having several senior players as leaders, there are often defined roles, such as captain and vice-captain.

When you look at Trippier’s CV, and the role he played as Newcastle skipper, it seemed a no-brainer to name him as captain, and whilst he is a new signing, his pedigree means he would instantly command the respect of the dressing room and the supporters.

So, it’s no surprise he will be a leader at Wolves, but Peixoto needs to ensure that all the players mentioned are happy with this approach.

Similarly, he could risk alienating players who aren’t part of that, such as Ladislav Krejčí. The Czechia international is captain of his country, so he would expect to be part of that group at Molineux, although Peixoto perhaps didn’t include him due to doubts over his future.

Ultimately, it will be interesting to see how this plays out, but the most important thing is that Peixoto has a strong dressing room with big characters that are all united in trying to help Wolves reach the Premier League.
