AC Milan and Inter both appear keen on building their new stadium in the San Siro area, rather than in San Donato or Rozzano. During a recent event, a rather peculiar underground design was proposed for the area.

There have been many twists and turns in Milan’s stadium pursuit over the years, and there is still no clear view for the future. Nevertheless, with the San Donato project now officially on hold, the Rossoneri are focusing on San Siro with Inter.

As reported by Calcio e Finanza, during the recent ‘Il Foglio a San Siro’ event at which Beppe Marotta and Paolo Scaroni were present, a new and unique design was proposed to them. Indeed, Ion Fund’s Davide Bruno has proposed an underground design (see photos below).

“A revolutionary idea that would see the San Siro stadium in an underground form, the facility would disappear. The fans would become furious, due to the lack of a spectacularization process, but we have an obligation towards the planet, the country and Milan: to see an underground system that restores and makes the world of nature prevail.

“We are talking about 20 thousand trees, 500 thousand flowers, 7 km of slopes and pedestrian paths that would see the restoration of a place where San Siro could have the same comfort characteristics,” Bruno stated.

It would be an unprecedented project, seeing as the stadium would be completely covered by ground with no elevation compared to the nearby areas. Frankly, in terms of feasibility, it seems like a rather ridiculous suggestion, especially since it would cost €1.5bn (not including cost for San Siro area) as per the documents.

On the other hand, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the environmentalists – who have been battling against the stadium since the start – take a liking to the proposal. After all, it would guarantee a lot of greenery and limit the noise.
