Arsenal come into the campaign with high hopes after coming agonisingly close to winning the lot last season. They reached the final in Budapest and took Paris Saint-Germain to penalties, but were beaten after Gabriel missed the fifth spot-kick.

The Gunners will come back with a vengeance, though, after enjoying a productive summer transfer window and making a bright start to the Premier League campaign.

Elsewhere, Manchester City made an early exit in the round of 16, and new head coach Enzo Maresca will hope to improve on Pep Guardiola’s showing there.

Their cross-town rivals United are back at UEFA’s top table for the first time since going out in the group stage in 2023/24. It will be a first career campaign in Europe for Michael Carrick, who helped the club win this competition as a player in 2007/08.

Also in the fold are Andoni Iraola’s new-look Liverpool, who left it late to secure their qualification for this tournament last season, and Europa League champions Aston Villa, who have lost a number of key players including Morgan Rogers, Ezri Konsa and Ollie Watkins since breezing past Freiburg in May.
