Defences and goalkeepers deny early breakthrough

Champions League HT: No goals between Newcastle and Barcelona
Barcelona and Newcastle went into the break level at 0-0 in Champions League round of 16 first leg at St. James’ Park.
Barcelona reached half time at 0-0 against Newcastle United in first leg of Champions League round of 16.
The English side began the match with strong energy backed by the loud crowd at St James' Park. Newcastle pressed high and created early danger forcing Barcelona to defend carefully in the opening minutes.
The first warning came from a corner kick when goalkeeper Joan Garcia failed to clear the ball cleanly. Defender Pau Cubarsi reacted quickly and cleared the danger close to the goal line.
Newcastle continued to push forward early in the half. Winger Anthony Elanga managed to enter the box and take a shot but Garcia produced important save to keep the score level.
Barcelona struggled to find their usual rhythm during the opening phase. Newcastle’s pressing made it difficult for the Spanish side to build attacks especially on the right flank where the hosts worked hard to limit the influence of Lamine Yamal.
As the half progressed, Barcelona began to settle and enjoy more possession, gradually pushing Newcastle deeper into their own half.
Barcelona’s best moment came from a dangerous cross from the left side that almost forced own goal from defender Dan Burn. The ball went just wide after the defender’s touch.
Later Newcastle goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale had to react quickly to stop a tight angle shot from Yamal as Barcelona looked for the opening goal.
Both teams played at a high tempo during the first 45 minute. Newcastle showed strong intensity without the ball while Barcelona enjoyed more possession as the half went on.
However neither side could find the breakthrough before the interval.
