Gunners closing in on crucial top-eight finish

The Gunners may have seen their Premier League title bid take a huge blow following Saturday’s disappointing 2-2 draw with Aston Villa but have generally impressed in Europe thus far.

Mikel Arteta’s side reached the quarter-final stage last season for the first time in well over a decade and perhaps their relative domestic struggles will lead to a more concerted European push this time.

Arsenal sit fifth in the Champions League table heading into tonight’s action, having won four of their opening six games.

They drew with Europa League holders Atalanta and lost to Inter Milan but have otherwise impressed, with the 5-1 win away at Sporting CP surely their standout performance.

On Wednesday night, Arsenal host Dinamo Zagreb in their penultimate game of the first stage of the competition, with progression to the knockout rounds in sight.

Teams who finish in the top eight of the table will go straight into the round of 16, which begins on Tuesday, March 4, 2025.

What do Arsenal need to qualify for Champions League knockout stages?

If Arsenal beat Dinamo Zagreb: A place in the top eight would be all but secured but not 100% guaranteed.

If Arsenal draw with Dinamo Zagreb: A win would most likely be required in their final game, away at Girona, but even two draws may be enough if results go their way.

If Arsenal lose to Dinamo Zagreb: Beating Girona will be a must, but they would again be relying on other results to prevent a February play-off.
