Champions League prediction – 22/01/2025

RB Leipzig vs Sporting Lisbon

There’s an intriguing matchup in the early kick-off as Leipzig host Sporting. The former have endured a wretched European campaign and have lost all six of their Champions League games.

With nothing to play for, will Leipzig’s underperforming side play with freedom?

Sporting are 19th and still have a chance of qualifying automatically for the Round of 16. Rui Borges appears to have steadied the ship after the ill-fated appointment of Joao Pereira as Ruben Amorim’s replacement.

Two of Europe’s most coveted forwards, Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres, go head-to-head here.

Prediction: Both teams to score and Viktor Gyokeres anytime scorer (9/2)

Shakhtar Donetsk vs Brest

Brest have been one of the surprise packages of the season and a trip to Germany to face Shakhtar Donetsk will hold no fear. The French side have already won four times in the league phase and another here could take them into the top eight.

Shakhtar have have not played a competitive fixture since mid-December, so rust is likely.

Prediction: Brest win (6/4)

Sparta Prague vs Inter Milan

Inter Milan boast the best defensive record in the Champions League this season and have conceded just once in the competition to date.

We expect more of the same here, as Simeone Inzaghi’s side shutout the Czech club.

Prediction: Inter to win, Both teams to score – No (5/4)

Arsenal vs Dinamo Zagreb

Arsenal could confirm their place in the last 16 with a win at the Emirates this evening.

Mikel Arteta’s side have been set-piece specialists in the Premier League this season and could find joy through that route in North London. Just five teams have conceded more set-piece goals than Dinamo Zagreb (3) in the Champions League this season.

Prediction: Gabriel Maghalaes to score a header (11/2)

Celtic vs Young Boys

Celtic are within reach of the Champions League’s knockout rounds for the first time since 2012/13.

Young Boys are the visitors to Glasgow tonight, having lost all six of their games in this season’s competition. A raucous Celtic Park crowd can roar Celtic on to a crucial win, which could be enough for a playoff place. We’re backing Brendan Rodgers’ side to get the job done – just.

Prediction: Celtic to win, Both teams to score – No (6/4)

Feyenoord vs Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich have been in freescoring mood this season and have averaged 3.5 goals per game across their last four fixtures. Key to their success has been Michael Olise, who has taken to top-level football like a duck to water this season. The summer signing from Crystal Palace has five goal involvements in five Champions League starts this season.

Prediction: Bayern Munich to win and Michael Olise to score or assist (20/21)

AC Milan vs Girona

After a tough start, AC Milan have found their form in Europe. Four straight wins have put the Rossoneri within reach of the knockout rounds, amid a season of inconsistency in Serie A.

Girona, meanwhile, have lost their last three and are heading toward an early exit. The Spaniards should put up a decent effort, but we’re expecting Milan to edge an entertaining game.

Prediction: Milan to win and Both teams to score, Yes (9/4)

Paris Saint-Germain vs Manchester City

A crunch clash in the French capital between two underperforming giants. PSG are dominant domestically again but have struggled in Europe, while Manchester City have found their form of late after a forgettable festive period.

There’s plenty on the line with both teams in danger of an early exit and we’re expecting a tight game at the Parc des Princes.

Prediction: Draw and Both teams to score, Yes (10/3)

Real Madrid vs Red Bull Salzburg

Real Madrid have not convinced in the Champions League this season but know how to turn it on when it matters. Kylian Mbappe was on target twice during the weekend win over Las Palmas, as Real moved to the top of La Liga.

Their opponents this evening, Salzburg, are enduring a difficult campaign. Fifth in the Austrian Bundesliga, Salzburg sacked ex-Liverpool assistant Pepijn Lijnders last month. They’ve lost five of their six games in the Champions League this season, conceding a whopping 22 goals.

Prediction: Real Madrid to win by 3+ goals and Kylian Mbappe to score (Evens)
