Champions League Preview: Barcelona vs Feyenoord

Barcelona aren’t just winning games right now. They are making a complete mess of anyone standing in their way. Hansi Flick’s side have scored 17 goals in their first four LaLiga matches, including a brutal 5-0 demolition of Valencia at Mestalla. Four games, four wins and an attack that looks like it has absolutely no interest in showing mercy.

Barcelona’s Real Test: the Champions League

Barcelona are chasing their sixth European crown, but there is one small problem — the Champions League has become something of a nightmare for the Catalans in recent years.

Last season, Atlético Madrid knocked them out in the quarterfinals. The year before that, Barcelona reached the semifinals and still went home empty-handed. For all their dominance, the Catalans have repeatedly found a way to turn European dreams into European heartbreak.

This year, however, Flick’s squad looks ready to have another go. And standing in their way on Matchday 1 is Feyenoord.

The Dutch side return to the Champions League after playing in the Europa League last season. They are also unbeaten in the Eredivisie, with three wins and two draws from their first five games. Nice. Unfortunately for them, they now have to go to Barcelona.

The Champions League returns on Wednesday, September 9, with Barcelona hosting Feyenoord at Spotify Camp Nou. Both teams begin an eight-match journey through the new league phase, but only one of them arrives looking like they could score five before halftime and still complain about missing chances.

Barcelona 3-0 Feyenoord

Let’s not overcomplicate this one. Barcelona are flying. Feyenoord are unbeaten. That’s cute.

But this Barcelona side are playing like someone forgot to tell them the season had just started and not the Champions League final.

Raphinha already has six goals, while Lamine Yamal and Fermín López have four apiece. Anthony Gordon has added four assists. Flick has basically assembled an attacking department that looks less like a football team and more like a personal vendetta against defenders.

And now Rodri is in the midfield alongside Pedri. Good luck, Feyenoord.

Barcelona should dominate possession, create chances for fun and spend most of the night knocking on the door. Feyenoord will need to be nearly perfect defensively — and probably pray a little — if they want to leave Catalonia with anything.

The Dutch side may have arrived in Spain unbeaten. They may not leave that way.
