We have picked out the UEFA Champions League team of the week following two nights of entertainment on the biggest stage in European football.
There’s no representation from Chelsea, Liverpool or Spurs following disappointing performances, while there is one very big omission from our frontline.
Four crucial saves from Ugurcan Cakir helped Galatasaray secure a famous victory over Liverpool in Istanbul on Tuesday. He denied some of the most expensive players in football to keep a clean sheet, the Turkish club’s first in 24 games in European competition.
It looked like it was going to be a tough night for the PSG defence when Barcelona cut them open in the first half of Wednesday night’s clash. Marcus Rashford found space on Achraf Hakimi’s side to play in the ball for Ferran Torres to open the scoring.
Even with key players missing, Luis Enrique’s men recovered well and the Moroccan international played a key role in their comeback win. The contest appeared to be heading for a draw following Senny Mayulu’s equaliser, until Hakimi set up Goncalo Ramos for a last-minute winner with a perfect pass.
Kairat Almaty were probably one of the weakest teams Real Madrid will ever face, although memories of their shock defeat to FC Sheriff Tiraspol were likely in the back of their heads on Tuesday.
Xabi Alonso put out a strong lineup and was rewarded with a comfortable 5-0 win. Dean Huijsen was among their most impressive performers, winning 100 percent of his tackles (4) and successfully completing all of dribbles (4/4).
The Spain centre-back also won 13 duels, more than any other player in the match, while also making six recoveries, four clearances and three interceptions. What a workhorse!
Inter Milan made light work of Slavia Prague as they scored three goals within 65 minutes at the San Siro, allowing manager Christian Chivu to sub off his key players.
One man who played the full 90 was Alessandro Bastoni, who played a important role in his side keeping a clean sheet and helped out in attack. He created two big chances, one of which ended in a goal, and had a big chance with a header that he sent over the bar.
The Italian chipped in with seven recoveries, four clearances and an interception as well, while he was also the most fouled player on the pitch, winning four free kicks for his side.
No player created more chances (5) in Bayern Munich’s 5-1 win over Pafos FC on Tuesday than Raphael Guerrero, with two of those considered big chances. He didn’t get an assist but did score their second of the night on a fantastic night for the 31-year-old.
Kevin De Bruyne shook off the disappointment of his substitution during the weekend’s defeat to AC Milan to inspire Napoli to victory over Sporting CP on Wednesday evening.
The former Manchester City playmaker linked up beautifully with former Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund for both goals in their 2-1 win. De Bruyne powered past a number of opponents before providing a perfect ball for his teammate’s opener, then delivered a lovely cross for him to head home.
Mario Pasalic may have had the fewest touches (53) in the match between Atalanta and Club Brugge, but he had biggest impact on the game.
The former Chelsea midfielder won the penalty that led to the equaliser and scored the winner to complete a come-from-behind 2-1 win and exact a measure of revenge on the side that knocked them out of the knockout stages last season.
Yes, Pafos FC are one of the weakest teams in the Champions League this season, but you cannot ignore the magnificence of Michael Olise. He assist two of Bayern’s goals before scoring a fantastic one of his own as Bayern Munich destroyed the Cypriot outfit 5-1 away.
Igor Paixao just misses out on selection despite being involved in three of Marseille’s four goals against Ajax, grabbing a goal and a brace of assists in their 4-0 win.
Jens Petter Hauge has pipped him after scoring both of Bodo/Glimt’s goals against Spurs, the second of which saw him make fools of the defence before finishing with style. He also created five chances on the night, more than the entire Tottenham lineup combined.
There were so many outstanding performances from forwards this week that it was almost impossible to pick just two. Kylian Mbappe misses out despite his hat-trick, given the level of opposition Kairat Almaty provided. Lautaro Martinez, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Harry Kane were also excellent, but we have gone for Julian Alvarez instead.
Atletico Madrid smashed Eintracht Frankfurt 5-1 and the Argentina international was involved in three of them, providing two assists and scoring a penalty. The 25-year-old is in flying form this season with seven goals and three assists in eight appearances in all competitions.
Erling Haaland scored a brace against Monaco to increase his Champions League tally to 52 goals in 50 appearances, a record in the competition. The Manchester City striker showed incredible athleticism for his first before putting his second away with a brilliant header.
