A wind of change is about to blow through the Champions League starting from the 2027-2028 season. UEFA has officially announced a major reform: from now on, the competition will kick off with a single, exclusive match—the reigning champions will play at home on Tuesday night. Dubbed the "star match", this opening event will serve as the official launch of Europe’s most prestigious club tournament.

Until now, the first matchday of the group stage was spread over three days (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday) with several fixtures scheduled throughout the program. This new format will dramatically change the opening dynamic: the defending champions will enjoy maximum media exposure, turning this evening into a true celebration of European football, much like the opening game of a World Cup or a European Championship.

The announcement was made during the TV rights tender for the 2027-2031 period, jointly organized by UEFA and the ECA. The objective is clear: boost the competition’s appeal, create a must-watch television event, and shine the spotlight on the reigning champions. This unique kickoff could well become a highlight of the European football calendar.
