At the age of 41, Hernandez is a renowned figure in his country, where he officiated 219 La Liga games, during which he awarded 76 penalties.

Alejandro Hernandez will be the referee of a Juventus game for the second time

Hernandez has refereed only three Champions League matches so far, the first of which came in November 2021, when he made his debut in the major European competition by officiating Juventus’ 4-2 home win against Zenit.

However, the Spaniard also boasts decent international experience in general, having officiated more than 20 games across Europa League, Conference League, Euro and World Cup qualifiers.

Hernandez has awarded two penalties in the previous three Champions League games he has refereed, one of which was in favour of Juventus and eventually converted by Paulo Dybala.
