Championship clubs have approved a switch to squad cost ratio rules, giving West Brom and Wolves greater spending flexibility from next season.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, 20 of 24 clubs backed the change at Friday's EFL meeting, clearing the 16-vote threshold.

PSR, introduced in 2017/18, limited second-tier losses to £39m over three years, a rule Albion breached. They were docked two points last month and, after receiving written reasons last week, did not appeal having secured safety.

Premier League clubs voted last November to adopt SCR, capping player costs at 85 per cent of football revenue and allowing a £10m annual capital injection.

Wolves, set to be relegated, could not vote as they remain a Premier League club, but will benefit next season.

Albion have championed the shift since Shilen Patel's Bilkul Football bought the club from Guochuan Lai more than two years ago.

Albion's PSR position was forecast to ease from this summer, offering more room to manoeuvre. SCR prioritises revenue streams and lets owners speculate further.

League One clubs were set to vote on aligning with League Two by cutting permitted spending from 60 to 50 per cent of turnover. A salary cap is favoured by some but is not on the ballot, and many clubs want costs reduced as owners tire of bankrolling losses.
