Sunday is Austrian National Day, but our boys are likely to hold the celebrations until the end of a big match in the capital. At 17:00 CET, Thomas Letsch's charges will face FK Austria Vienna to conclude the first half of the ADMIRAL Bundesliga regular season. The showdown will be refereed by Tyrolean Walter Altmann, who just three weeks ago received the Bruno award for best referee of the past season.
Yesterday's UEFA Europa League disappointment is naturally still weighing on our minds, but there's no time to regret. After all, we're playing against one of the best teams in the Austrian top flight. The Violets have accumulated 15 points in their last six league games, largely making up for their shaky start that included European and UNIQA ÖFB Cup exits.

It's a good thing that our Red Bulls are playing against one of their favourite opponents. With the exception of the unimportant 4-0 defeat during our championship celebrations in 2017/18, we are unbeaten in competitive meetings since September 2014! We have 29 wins and nine draws in duels against the Vienna outfit. To better understand the length of this remarkable streak: since our last defeat at Austria (in March 2014), life expectancy in this country has improved by more than half a year, despite the pandemic! If things get tough, we can count on our super subs. Seven substitutes have already made a scoring impact for us in the league campaign so far, while Austria head coach Stephan Helm can not boast of any. Also on the bench: new assistant coach Zlatko Junuzovic, who will be celebrating his debut as a FC Red Bull Salzburg assistant coach.
Whether in the away section – we've compiled the away information on coming to support us HERE – or at home watching on Sky Sport Austria – there are many ways to support our boys on Sunday afternoon.
There are certain parallels between Austria Wien and last season. They also had a somewhat tough start to the season and were among the top teams right until the end. A few things have changed compared to last year. For example, Fitz and Malone, two key players, are no longer with the team. But the basic structure has remained the same, and they have since settled.
Thomas Letsch on Austria Vienna's season so far
The Ferencvaros match is still in our bones, both physically and mentally. This encounter was a huge disappointment for us because we gave the game away within eight minutes, which should never have happened. But in football, one challenge immediately follows the next. Now we have to take on Austria Vienna on Sunday, which ideally means getting three points – as we have done against them several times recently.
Thomas Letsch on the chance to respond
After a less than ideal start to the season, Austria Vienna now back in the race for the top spots and will therefore be difficult opponents on Sunday. We expect a determined and highly motivated team, against whom we will have to give our all to get a result.
