Luis Diaz causes a stir with a dream goal against Union. But because he misses another great chance, there are also negative discussions. Now Lothar Matthäus clearly stands in front of the Bayern star.
After the Champions League coup in Paris, Bayern had to bake smaller rolls in the Bundesliga. In the 2:2 draw in Berlin, the team initially lacked focus and two deficits spoke a clear language. Matthäus wrote in his Sky column that the start to the game was not good enough – but: The team showed a reaction and came back twice.
At the heart of it all: Luis Diaz. The Colombian scored a world-class goal to level the score at 1-1. „Luis Diaz’s goal was world class. It’s nice to have a player who works hard for the team, who scores and creates great chances,“ said the record international.
But the evening was to hold one more negative scene for the Colombian, even if it was not as dramatic as the red card against Paris. Diaz missed a huge chance to make it 2:1 shortly after his goal after running in alone on Union goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow. „He should make more consistent use of it, but you can forgive him for his outstanding goal,“ Matthäus emphasized.

President Herbert Hainer also praised Diaz recently – with a little side-swipe: „He’s my favourite new signing this season, even if he doesn’t always score.“ The criticism is well-known: Diaz works hard, often gets into good positions – but he still lacks the finishing touch.
Nevertheless, the 28-year-old is a clear top performer in Munich. He has blossomed under Kompany, scoring 16 goals in 17 competitive matches. Fans and club management know what they have in him. And even if the exploitation of chances remains a problem: Diaz delivers – spectacularly and reliably.
