Leicester City attacker Yuka Momiki says that the team must be patient this season as they begin their journey under new head coach Amandine Miquel.

The Foxes appointed Miquel as their new boss earlier this summer after she impressed whilst in charge of former club Stade de Reims.

Miquel will bring fresh ideas and a new playing style to The King Power Stadium but midfielder Momiki says that Leicester City need to be patient as they strive for on-field success.

“I think we all understand that change takes time, so I think we are being patient as we look to improve ourselves,” Momiki said when speaking in a Barclays Women’s Super League media event.

“When the season starts, we may win some games and lose some games but physically and mentally, we need to be patient.

“It’s going to be tough but I’m pretty sure that the team will help each other when it comes to being more consistent.”

Momiki went on to discuss Miquel’s character. The Frenchwoman is known to like a joke but Momiki says that once everyone is on the pitch, it’s about getting down to working hard.

She said “When you speak to her off the field, she likes to joke a lot but on the field, the details are really scripted, so there is a balance [between light-hearted and taking things seriously].

“She sees it as a longer period to build the team. The first couple of months, we have been focusing on progress rather than results. It helps us a lot going into the new season.”

Looking ahead to this season’s challenges, Momiki is most excited about facing her Japanese teammates when Leicester City take on Manchester City.

She said “I’m looking forward to facing Manchester City because they’ve got four Japanese players and also, three of them are my former teammates in Japan. It’ll be tough to play against them but it’ll also be really fun.”

Leicester City kick-off the new Barclays Women’s Super League season with a fixture at Liverpool on Sunday 22 September 2024.
