Nicolas Schmid kept Portsmouth in it with eight saves. Boro piled on the pressure throughout, producing 20 attempts with eight on target and forcing 14 corners.

After half-time, Boro introduced Sontje Hansen and Luke Ayling, and Hansen twice drew sharp stops from Schmid as the hosts pushed for a breakthrough.

Six minutes of added time were indicated before Portsmouth landed the decisive punch.

Portsmouth managed just three attempts but survived thanks to disciplined defending. They also made 44 clearances.

Next, Boro visit Ipswich. Portsmouth host Ipswich next.
