Charleroi head coach Rik De Mil was back on the training pitch, preparing his squad for one of their most important matches in recent years. The Zebras travel to Antwerp today for a high-stakes European playoff final, with a place in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Conference League on the line. A win would mark Charleroi’s return to European competition for the first time in five years.

DH Sports reports that, despite their impressive 3–1 win at Bosuil during the regular season, De Mil is under no illusions about the challenge ahead. “A lot of people talk to me about that match, but this one will be completely different—it’s a final,” he said in his pre-match press conference. The coach confirmed that his side has stuck to their usual preparation, with one exception: they’ve been practicing penalties, knowing that a draw after 90 minutes will lead to a shootout.

Charleroi enter the match with momentum, while Antwerp have struggled for form, winning just two of their last 12 matches. Still, De Mil refused to accept the role of favorites. “We’re playing away against a team that made the playoffs. That’s no small thing,” he said. He praised Antwerp’s performance in their recent match against Club Brugge, highlighting their strength in transition under interim coach Andries Ulderink.

In terms of team news, Antoine Bernier is back in the squad after recovering from a muscle concern, but Charleroi will be without Alexis Flips, Grejohn Kyei, Aiham Ousou, and Massamba Sow due to injury.

For De Mil, the match carries added significance—it’s his first final as a head coach. While he has vast experience from his time at Club Brugge, including title-winning campaigns and European nights against teams like Atletico Madrid, he acknowledged that this occasion feels different. “I feel the staff and the players are very focused. There’s no stress.”

Charleroi will be backed by 800 traveling supporters, a number that De Mil believes could make a difference. “Even if it’s in Antwerp in front of a fierce crowd, I’m sure we’ll hear them. We’ll feel their presence.”

Kick-off is set for later today at Bosuil Stadium, with a European ticket on the line. For both clubs, it’s a final opportunity to salvage their season, and for Charleroi, a chance to take the next step in their long-term vision.
