Sheffield Wednesday’s talks over signing West Ham United midfielder Conor Coventry have stalled, as reported by The Star.
The Owls are looking to wrap up several transfer deals this month as they bid to strengthen their cause for safety.
After a couple of months of the season, it looked likely that Wednesday were set for a return to League One, but since Danny Rohl’s arrival, they now look like a side who have the best chance of beating the drop.
Wednesday have 20 league games remaining, and with their form taking a positive turn, they now find themselves only three points adrift of safety, putting significant pressure on the sides above them.
So, with the position they are in, Rohl is keen to strengthen his side the best he can, and it looked as though Coventry was a player he was looking to add to his side.
It was reported earlier this week that Sheffield Wednesday’s interest inCoventry was going to step up this week.
The Owls were set to hold talks with the 23-year-old, but it was stated that they had some convincing to do, as the club faced competition from other Championship clubs, as well as League One sides and teams from Holland.
However, it has now been reported by The Star, that those talks between Wednesday, West Ham United, and the player himself have stalled.
The report states that the Owls are looking to sign Coventry on a permanent deal, as the midfielder looks destined for a move away from the Hammers in search of regular football.
However, Coventry and West Ham are said to be weighing up their options ahead of a permanent switch, and the Owls face competition from Charlton, who are trying to organise a deal that would see the player remain in London.
Coventry came through the youth academy at West Ham United, working his way up the under-18s and under-21s and into the first team.
However, the 23-year-old has struggled during his step-up to the first team, as he’s only appeared 10 times for the club.
None of them have come this season, with seven coming last season in the Premier League, EFL Cup, and the Conference League.
Coventry has spent most of his time at the club either in their academy teams or on loan, with him playing at Lincoln City, Peterborough United, MK Dons, and Rotherham United.
The midfielder played 16 times for the Millers last season, as the club survived relegation back to League One.
If Sheffield Wednesday can get a deal over the line for Conor Coventry, then they would be adding a very exciting addition to their ranks.
He is someone who can operate in multiple positions and is very neat and tidy on the ball, something that would fit into Rohl’s style.
Wednesday don’t have loads of options in the midfield area, so adding someone like Coventry can help Rohl when it comes to options, but it can also upgrade their midfield and help their current players.
