With a third of the Championship season now in the history books, Charlton Athletic remain one of the surprise packages in the current table.

Despite not seeing anywhere near as much of the spotlight in comparison to Birmingham City and Wrexham following their success in the League One play-off final six months ago, the Addicks continue to be the best-performing out of the newly-promoted sides under the experienced figurehead of Nathan Jones.

Charlton's success thus far has been built on defensive solidity and a robust approach in the middle of the park, with plenty of their first 15 encounters being extremely cagey in terms of overall performances and final scorelines.

Such a theme continued on Saturday, where the Welshman's side were defeated for the first time since October 4th, with Wrexham making it an unhappy return to his home country for the Reds' boss as Josh Windass bagged the winner from the penalty spot 13 minutes from time.

However, that hasn't taken anything away from the mass plaudits which Jones and his squad of workhorses have received across the opening three months of the campaign, with his intriguing 3-4-1-2 system or flipped 3-1-4-2 systems bringing high levels of success in recent outings.

As such, there is a strong onus on midfield selection for the former Luton Town boss, although it means that some are likely to remain disappointed with the amount of minutes they have received from August onwards.

As such, when asked if there is one player likely to depart permanently or on loan, Football League World's Charlton fan pundit, Chris, believes Karoy Anderson should be allowed to depart on a short-term basis.

The 21-year-old has been on Charlton's books since 2013, progressing through the relevant age groups within a highly-rated academy before signing a maiden professional contract in the summer of 2021.

He marked his debut for the South London club with a goal in an EFL Trophy defeat to Plymouth Argyle in October 2022, before spending time at Aldershot Town of the National League in order to enhance his overall development.

Since then, the 17-time Jamaican has gone on to feature 78 times in total for his boyhood club, scoring five times and posting a further four assists.

The bulk of those came last season as, in 48 overall outings, Anderson was a reliable figure in Jones' midfield despite starting just 16 league games, as Charlton returned to the Championship for the first time in five years.

However, several additions in the summer, who were recruited to bolster said department, have seen the homegrown talent play just one minute of second-tier football against Bristol City, leaving our fan pundit to suggest that a loan move would be beneficial.

"It's quite difficult because, over the past two summers, Nathan Jones has cleared out pretty much every player he didn't rate, and brought in nearly half a new squad this summer," Chris told FLW.

"If I had to pick one player, I'd pick Karoy Anderson to go out to a League One side in January. It would be the most likely outgoing," he added.

"Bringing in Knibbs, Carey, Rankin-Costello this summer and the sudden rise of youngster, Ibrahim Fuller, we now have eight natural midfielders competing for three positions.

"As a result, Anderson has played just one minute of Championship football this season and has only made the bench five times," our fan pundit explained.

"He's rated very highly by Nathan Jones, as shown by giving him a new three-year deal last month. But, due to other depth we have in midfield compared to other areas of the pitch, and the fact he's just 21 years old, he would definitely benefit from going elsewhere and getting regular minutes.

"Even if it's just in the short-term, it helps him to prepare and fight for a role in the side next summer."

Karoy Anderson would benefit from Charlton Athletic, League One loan

As previously mentioned, Anderson's recent penning of a new deal is a strong show of faith in his potential from Jones, meaning a short-term loan would be the most likely route to a departure.

Having previously made 63 appearances in League One, the midfielder certainly wouldn't be out of place in the division, especially for a side in the same position which Charlton found themselves in last campaign.

However, it would be an experience which only enhances his chances of becoming a regular in the coming years, with Jones known for building long-term visions and cultures at clubs such as the Reds and previously, with Luton.
