Will Mannion has been Charlton Athletic's first-choice goalkeeper so far this season.
Charlton Athletic goalkeeper Will Mannion has been the first-choice at The Valley this season, but he may be concerned ahead of the January transfer window following Nathan Jones' failed business during the summer.
The Addicks only kept five clean sheets in League One over the course of last season, so it was no surprise when Jones signed Mannion on a free transfer from Cambridge United in order to strengthen his goalkeeping department.
Harry Isted also left Charlton to sign for Burton Albion as part of the club's goalkeeping reshuffle, but in an ideal world, Jones would not have finished there, as the Addicks were linked with several other stoppers before the end of the summer transfer window.
Therefore, Mannion may be concerned that his manager could pick up where he left off in search of another goalkeeper once the January transfer window has opened, which could put his starting place in jeopardy.
Following the capture of Mannion from Cambridge, Charlton went on to be linked with several other goalkeepers over the course of the summer.
The Addicks reportedly explored the possibility of completing a deal to sign John Ruddy from Birmingham City prior to his move to Newcastle United, while they were also linked with Adam Davies of Sheffield United before he agreed a new contract at Bramall Lane.
Viljami Sinisalo, who impressed in League One for Exeter City last season, was also a target for Charlton before he joined Scottish champions Celtic, as per journalist Richard Cawley.
Arsenal goalkeeper Karl Hein was another one who was on Charlton's radar, but he instead made a loan move to La Liga side Real Vallodolid.
Veteran shot stopper Asmir Begovic was arguably the most notable figure that the Addicks held talks with during the summer, but the 37-year-old decided to make a return to Everton rather than dropping into League One following his departure from Queens Park Rangers.
Considering how many 'keepers Charlton were linked with before the transfer window closed at the end of August, Mannion must have some concern that Jones will look to find a replacement for him in January.
Mannion has already kept as many clean sheets in League One this season as Isted and Ashley Maynard-Brewer managed to produce between them across 46 matches during the previous campaign.
The 26-year-old has kept five shutouts in 13 appearances in the third tier so far this season, and he has only conceded 14 goals in those games.
The physically imposing goalkeeper has definitely instilled more confidence in his defence than Isted and Maynard-Brewer did last season, and despite a few moments that he will be disappointed with, it would be fair to say that he has made a reasonably good start to his career in SE7.
He missed the Addicks' latest defeat against Exeter due to a thigh injury, and will no doubt be hoping to return as soon as possible in order to show that he deserves to continue as Jones' first-choice beyond the upcoming transfer window.
However, with the number one shirt at The Valley still vacant, and a manager who seemed keen to sign another option in the summer, Charlton's number 21 might be concerned about his future in the starting line-up ahead of January.
