Defender Lloyd Jones is set to sign a new contract with Charlton Athletic, despite strong interest from elsewhere in the EFL pyramid.

That is the latest from journalist, Alan Nixon, via his Patreon, who claims that the centre-back is due to increase his stay at the South London club and turn down the interest that came his way from other clubs.

This is, of course, fantastic news for Charlton Athletic fans who would have been concerned about his current contract situation, given it expires in the summer.

Wycombe Wanderers and Oxford United were the two clubs eyeing up a move for his signature, but Jones has reportedly decided to remain at The Valley.

The 29-year-old has been crucial for the Addicks this season, so the announcement of a new contract will go down very well among the Charlton faithful.

The experienced centre-back arrived at Charlton back in the summer of 2023 after winning Cambridge United's Player of the Season award, so he came with plenty of expectations.

Fortunately, it feels as though Jones has lived up to those expectations, as he has been a hugely important asset to Charlton over the last year-and-a-half.

Jones has suffered a couple of injuries during his Charlton spell, but when he is fit he tends to be selected to start in defence, and last season he even scored two league goals.

This season, he has been one of the first names on the team-sheet, when fit, under Nathan Jones, and that is likely to continue following his reported contract extension.

From his 17 league starts this season, ex-Liverpool man Jones has contributed to a whopping nine clean sheets and has even worn the captain's armband on a couple of occasions.

There is still a lot of work to do if Charlton are to reach the play-offs this season, but keeping hold of one of their best players despite him attracting interest from elsewhere, could potentially lift spirits around the place.

The Addicks currently sit 12th in League One and are seven points outside the play-off places, but they have two games in hand on some sides, and one game in hand on others, so everything could change in a flash.

Nathan Jones has worked hard to ensure that they are defensively solid, as shown by their number of clean sheets this season, but they are still prone to bad results which could ultimately cost them a play-off spot.

This Saturday, the Addicks suffered a 4-2 defeat away at fellow mid-table side, Rotherham United, which is a result that they will want to forget as quickly as possible.

There is still hope for Charlton, with roughly 20 games still to be played, and perhaps Lloyd Jones signing a new contract could give them the boost that they need.
