Charlton Athletic's season has been an excellent one, and Nathan Jones has helped push his team into contention for a top six finish in League One.

The Addicks have been in and around the play-off places for the majority of the campaign, but in the last month they have made fourth their own and despite defeat to Peterborough United at the weekend, they still have a six-point gap over seventh-place Bolton Wanderers.

Last season was not a memorable one at all for the South Londoners, but the arrival of Jones on the touchline did spur them on and he helped move his side away from any danger of the drop in 2023/24, and momentum has followed up to now.

However, improvements to the squad need to be made in the summer, whether Charlton stay in League One or win promotion through the play-offs, with one defining feature of their game stopping them from making that push to the top two.

Charlton summer transfer window predictions made

Wycombe Wanderers have a five-point advantage over the Addicks, while also having a game in hand and it seems unlikely that Jones will be able to turn over this gap by the end of the season and fourth looks to be the highest that they will finish.

Nevertheless, their destiny is in their own hands and if they can continue to pick up results, then they will find themselves playing in the play-offs at the end of the campaign, with a return to the second tier on the cards.

Football League World has asked their Charlton Fan Pundit, Emma Harknett, to predict two things that will happen in the summer.

She told FLW: "I think we need a new striker, and I think we need a creative midfielder.

"I know I've answered a question regarding Alex Gilbert before, but I've not seen enough of him to say if I want to sign him or not. But again, like I said before, we've only got Luke Berry, and at his age, I don't know if he'd be able to sustain another full season and for me, we are not creating enough."

Emma continued: "But we definitely need a striker. Obviously, we rely quite heavily on Matty Godden at the moment, and again, he's more of an aging striker. So, I'd like to see us bring in maybe a young, fast and aggressive striker.

"I'd also definitely bring in a pacey, quick midfielder. I would say maybe a box-to-box. That would be really, really good. So, that's what I'd like to see in the summer transfer window."

Charlton's lack of goals is a concern

While they are in an excellent position in the league table, there is cause for concern with the number of goals that Charlton have scored this season, as they have found the back of the net the least number of times compared to every other side in the top half of the table.

The Addicks have scored just 49 times in 2024/25 in League One, with Jones' efficient style of football carrying them to their current position rather than their ability to blow away teams on a weekly basis.

This does leave them vulnerable to results like their 3-0 defeat to Peterborough on Saturday as it could be said that they rely on their defensive work too much at times, but in the play-offs this could work to their benefit.

However, Charlton will want to bring in more creativity in the summer, especially if they win promotion to the Championship, as their current inability to score goals frequently will become more of a prevalent issue in a higher division.
